The allergic condition of hay fever occurs in the springtime and summertime, it affects both the nose and eyes in allergy prone people, and is often referred to as seasonal rhino conjunctivitis.
Hay fever is caused by tree, plant and flower pollen getting into the eyes, and into the nose by breathing in the particles, but different individuals can be affected by different kinds of pollen. The allergy condition primarily happens to atopic allergy prone families, usually starting in the teens with the allergy symptoms at their worst in the mid 20’s.
In late springtime, grasses like cocksfoot, timothy, rye and fescue are all producing pollen, whilst later in summer weeds such as nettles, plantain and mugwort will tend to trigger hay fever.
Some Symptoms of Hay Fever Allergy.
- Runny or itching nose with repeated sneezing bouts.
- Very itchy eyes which produce excess tears and watering.
- Itchy throat, ears and the palate inside the mouth.
- Difficulty with concentration and a general feeling of ‘unwellness’
In periods of very high pollen count, the allergy sufferer may experience bouts of ‘wheezing’, a condition recognized as ‘hay asthma’
The treatments for hay fever or rhino conjunctivitis are readily available either over the counter (OTC) or by prescription from a doctor.
Some Treatments for Hay Fever.
- The taking of anti-histamine tablets will help to alleviate the eye allergy symptoms of itching and excess watering, whilst a nasal spray will help reduce the runny nose and sneezing.
- Anti- allergy drops or sprays can assist in the prevention of the allergy being triggered, the use of Cromoglycate is often recommended and acts on the linings of the nose and eyes.
- For severe cases of hay fever, then steroid injections are available, and although they have proven to be effective for control of the allergy symptoms, the user can suffer side effects such as skin thinning, eye cataracts and osteoporosis.
Some sufferers of hay fever and rhino conjunctivitis have tried herbal and homeopathic treatments, but these are less effective than medicinal therapies, some ‘experts’ recommend a dose of honey each day before the pollen season, but results from this treatment are non conclusive.
