One of the symptoms of an eye allergy is the swelling and inflammation of the eyelids, and while such inflammation is not serious, it is important that it should be controlled.

The eye is a very delicate part of the body, and if there is any infection or allergy which affects it, and the condition is not treated, long term damage can result which may lead to scarring of the eye and cause visual impairment.

Any eye allergy which causes eye inflammation can usually be treated successfully by the application of topical anti-histamine eye drops, but there are other methods of treatment which include the use of herbal and homeopathic remedies which are said to promote recovery and be effective against the onset of complications.

Some Natural Remedies for Eye Allergies.

Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) The fruit of the bilberry is a well known alternative medicine, and has been found effective in the treatment of eye allergies and other eye conditions like macular degeneration and cataracts. It has the effect of strengthening the eye capillaries, which aids in the prevention of eye infection and maintaining general eye health.

Sutherlandia frutescens Is a small shrub found in South Africa, and is known  for its medicinal properties, it grows to about 1 meter tall and its leaves are used to form a concentrated decoction. It has known effects on the immune system on which it acts as a booster. The decoction from the plant is used for bathing the eye and surrounding area.

Aspalathus linearis  (Roobis Tea) Another small bush of South African origin, it twigs and leaves are crushed and a herbal tea is made from the extract (roobis tea). The extract is also used for external treatment both in and around the eye

It works against the eye allergy by acting as an anti-oxidant, which maintains a good supply of blood, oxygen and nutrients to the eye, all of which are necessary for the reduction of allergic inflammation and recovery.

Astralagus membranaceous. Is of Chinese origin, also known as ‘yellow leader’. It has been used for centuries as an alternative type herbal medicine, the root of the plant is used, and the infusion is said to have strong anti-inflammatory properties along with giving the immune system a boost, a healthy immune system is essential; to fighting off eye infections, and allergies.

Whilst some herbal/homeopathic treatments may have some therapeutic value, it often lies in the mind of the user as to its actual curative power!! For any sufferer of severe eye inflammation caused by an allergy, then it is still advisable to consult a doctor to have the condition correctly diagnosed and treated.
